The Alchemy Guide: Potions
Potion Kegs, Compiled by Sie Ming - Updated by Teresk
The following information on potion kegs was compiled from information provided on the In-Testing section of the official UO web site, from extensive player testing, and from comments made by OSI employees. Comments that appear in [brackets] provide additional information. Skill and resource requirements are taken from the new carpenter and tinker menus.
Potion Kegs [weigh 20 stones when empty]
Potion Kegs are made by tinkers and will require the following items to make: an empty keg, a barrel lid, a tap, and 10 empty bottles. [You may also want to read Lietgardis' Illustrated Guide to Making Potion Kegs for more information on their construction]

Empty kegs [each weigh 15 stones] are created by carpenters with 57.8 skill using:
  • 3 barrel staves (made by carpenters, requires 5 boards or 5 logs each).
    • may be attempted by carpenters of any skill
    • [each weigh 1 stone]
    • [fished up staves may also be used to make barrels, though they do not maintain their "From a shipwreck" label]
  • 1 set of hoops (made by tinkers, requires 5 iron ingots).
    • may be attempted by tinkers of any skill
    • [each weigh 5 stones]
  • 1 barrel lid (made by carpenters, requires 4 boards or 4 logs).
    • may be attempted by carpenters with a skill of 11
    • [each weigh 2 stones]
Tinkers  with 75 skill can then turn a regular keg into a potion keg with the following items:
  • 1 empty keg (made by carpenters as per the above method).
  • 1 barrel tap (made by tinkers with skill of 35, requires 2 ingots, weighs 1 stone).
  • 1 barrel lid (made by carpenters, requires 4 boards or 4 logs). This is in addition to the 1 lid needed by the carpenter to make the empty keg.
  • 10 empty bottles
Owning a Potion keg (see Firedog's explanation below for more detail)
  • Placing a potion in an empty potion keg will:
    • Make you the owner.
      • Owners can identify the type of potion keg without using the Taste Id skill
      • Non-owners will need to use taste id to identify a potion barrel.
    • Designate the type of potion the barrel can hold.
  • Placing a potion in a partially-filled potion keg will make you the owner if the barrel is in your inventory.
    • In order to place a potion in a partially-filled potion keg you must be the owner, or have identified the keg with the Taste Id skill.
    • The potion keg will only accept potions of the same strength and type.
  • Home-owners, co-owners and friends are the only ones who can take potions from a locked down keg. Anyone can put them in a locked down keg.
Looking at a keg
  • When empty, single clicking on a potion keg will return the message "a specially lined keg for holding potions".
  • When filled, single clicking on a potion keg will return:
    • "A keg of (color) liquid" for non-owners and anyone else that has not used taste-id on the barrel.
    • "A keg of (potion type)" for the owner or those who have used the Taste Id skill on the keg (up to 5 at a time).
  • A filled keg will also return a message giving a general description of how full it is.

    [Table provided by Dermott]

Filling the potion keg

  • Potion kegs can hold up to 100 potions of the same type. ["E.g. a lesser cure potion" is not the same type as "an orange potion" purchased from an NPC.]
  • Drag a potion onto the keg.
    • For an empty potion keg, any potion can be used.
    • For a partially filled keg.
      • You must be the owner, or have used the Taste Id skill on the keg.
      • The type of potion in the bottle must be known. ["a green potion" --purchased from an NPC-- is "known"]
      • The type of potion in the bottle must be the same as the type in the keg. ["You do not think it would be a good idea to mix these types of potions together"]
      • Weight of keg increases by 4 for every five potions added.
      • You do recieve a bottle back --though not decessarily the same bottle. The bottle goes in your main pack.
  • Potions can be crafted directly in the keg if there are no bottles in the alchemist's backpack.
    • After you begin to make a potion you will be given a targeting cursor.
    • Clicking on the potion keg will add one potion.
    • The same rules apply to this method as for dragging a potion onto the keg.

Retrieving items from keg:
Double click on the keg to retrieve a potion

  • If the keg is empty, you will receive the message "the keg is empty".
  • If the keg is partially filled or full.
    • The keg will fill one empty bottle in the user's backpack.
      • If the type of potion in the keg is known to the user, the new potion will already be identified.
      • If the type of the potion in the keg is unknown to the user, the new potion is identified by color only.
    • If no bottle in the user's backpack, the keg will ask for empty bottles. [you can not target another keg]
    • The weight of the keg [is] reduced by 4 for every five potions removed

Other interesting info: [all information in this section is player generated]

  • Potion Kegs are not stackable (as empty bottles are stackable). That is to say, you can not put several potion keg on top of each other and then later specify a certain number of kegs to remove.
  • Potion Kegs are stackable (as chests and tables are stackable). That is to say you can physically stack kegs as if they were real world objects, one on top of the other.
  • Potion Kegs can not be destroyed with an axe.
  • No other items (at least so far) can be added to potion kegs
  • You can not steal from a keg, "You can not steal what you can not see."(11/10/99)
  • You can not trap a barrel or a potion keg.

The posts below were made by OSI employees:

You can lock a potion keg down or place it in a secure container. If you put it in a secure container, it takes up only 1 item regardless of how many potions are in it.

Can they be dyed? would be nice to color code the barrels.
--Yes, using furniture dye tubs

If its a heal barrel does it have to be all greater heals? or can they be mixed?
--No, you cannot mix them

If I share a home with a person and make a barrel of a potion, can he just fill a bottle knowing I made a greater heal one? Will it be a greater heal to him? To my secondary characters?
--As it says on the website, they need to taste id it to know what kind of potion barrel it is (or taste id the potion)

When is the strength of a potion determined?
--When the potion is made, by the alchemist. [strength as in lesser, normal, greater]

If you your warrior has not identified it, he can still take potions from it, the potions will just say "a yellow potion". But they will still be greater heals.

Can we make potion barrels out of fished up staves?
Yup. You sure can.

Can you explain the ownership stuff in more detail?
Okey dokey:

Let's say that a potion keg is created or emptied. At that time, it doesn't have an owner. No problem so far.

NOW... let's say that the keg is locked down on the ground in your house. If you or a friend of the house comes along and places or grinds a potion into the keg, then that person becomes the owner of the keg. Still no problem.

Let's say then that somebody else comes along and wants to put a potion into the keg. Well, that person can't do that unless they first taste the keg to find out exactly what's in it. Got it?

Ok... so let's say that that person tastes (successfully) the contents. Then there are two people that can put potions into the keg at any time, and only one owner. Still with me?

Now... let's say that person #3 comes along (the actual house owner), unlocks the keg, and puts it in his/her backpack. Person #3 is NOT currently the owner or a taster. If person 3 tastes the contents, then person 3 is now ABLE to place potions in the keg. If person 3 subsequently places a potion into the keg, person 3 becomes the owner, since it is in his/her backpack. Good so far?

Next scenario. Person #3 (GM Alchemist) fills the keg completely up and hands it over to person #4 (Loyal Customer). Now, of course, Loyal Customer is neither owner nor taster at this time. (Loyal Customer can, of course, take unidentified potions out of the keg if he/she so wishes, trusting the integrity of the alchemist when using them.) Note that LC cannot currently become the owner of the keg, since it is full. He can, however, take a potion out and place it back in, thereby becoming the owner. OR (even more clever) he can use the potion keg up without ever becoming the owner. If he does so, then he can happily skip his way back to GM Alchemist, hand over the keg, and say "fill 'er up". Since GM Alchemist has remained the keg's owner, he has no need to taste the keg's contents or make himself an owner all over again before filling it up for his customer.

Got it?
